Step 1: Register with Outpost
Your journey begins with registering on the Outpost Recruitment website.
If you have the experience and skills needed in Canada’s construction industry, we’ll work with you to find a suitable opportunity. This typically includes comprehensive resume advice, as well as one-on-one consultations to determine your career goals and the roles you’re aiming to find.
For those of you who are less likely to benefit from working with a recruiter, your free account with Outpost still contains resume templates and other resources to help you in your job search in Canada.
In other words, there’s no risk to signing up and the worst case scenario is that you get access to a wealth of free resources.
Step 2: Draft A Strong Canadian-Style Resume
Submitting a strong resume that’s formatted for Canadian employers is crucial to your success, and where Outpost can add the most value to the process. Canadian employers expect to receive a resume in a specific format, and we insist on applying this format to help you maximize your chances of success in Canada. A strong resume will bring more interviews, assist in interview preparation, and help you attract a higher salary. We typically expect to see salary offers around 10-20% higher than you would have otherwise received with a weaker resume.
Read our blog on how to create a strong resume.
Step 3: Introductory Call With Outpost
In instances where we feel we can help, we will set up an informal video conference or in-person meeting with you. This discussion helps us tailor our approach to your needs and gives you the chance to ask questions about the process.
During the interview, we’ll dive into your background, experience, and professional aspirations. We’ll also explore your preferences regarding location, company culture, and the types of projects you’d like to work on. This helps us create a detailed profile that resonates with potential employers.
The screening interview is also your opportunity to ask questions about the recruitment process, the Canadian job market, or even what to expect from interviews with employers.
Think of this step as a collaborative conversation rather than a traditional interview. The better we understand you, the more effective we can be in matching you with the right role. This clarity allows us to tailor the next steps in the process, ensuring that our efforts align with your goals and priorities.
Step 4: Create A Profile For Employers
Outpost Recruitment will work with you to create a profile for presentation to employers, highlight suitable roles, provide insight into the market, and contact employers on your behalf. Depending on the situation, we’ll identify a suitable employer (or shortlist of employers) and talk you through the career opportunity with each other.
In the meantime, we ask you as the candidate to help us by taking ownership of the process by being proactive as we seek the make the best possible first impression with your future employer.
Step 5: Executing The Job Search
The pace of recruitment in Canada can be quite slow – especially compared to other locations around the world. Depending on whether it’s an urgent client role or we are presenting your “on spec” with a suitable employer (i.e. they do not have an immediate open opportunity) the timeline can vary greatly. As we search for a role for you, expect to receive updates on feedback as well as tips for getting ready for telephone / video / in-person interviews. We’ll also work with you to help you understand your career options and career progression opportunities based on.
Once we gain traction, first steps may look like a HR interview or an interview with a hiring manager. They will often be multiple stages to each interview process and we will work with you to help you prepare in the best possible way for every challenge along the way.
Once you have found the right match, Outpost will coach you through the closing process including addressing issues with your employment contract and negotiation of contract terms.
A signed offer may look like our work is done but we’ll be by your side to ensure you onboard smoothly with your employer and always be on hand to support your best interests with your new employer.
