Ruairi Spillane founded Outpost Recruitment and writes much of the Outpost blog, covering how construction and engineering professionals build a career in Canada. He writes from direct experience on both sides of the hiring table: an Irish immigrant himself, he moved to Vancouver in 2008 and has spent more than a decade placing local and international talent with Canada’s major construction firms.

Ruairi holds a Bachelor’s in Business Studies and a Master’s in Financial Services, and worked across mutuals funds, treasury and derivative valuations (risk management).  Settling in Vancouver, he saw skilled newcomers struggle to communicate their value to Canadian employers — the problem that led him to launch Moving2Canada.com to help newcomers get established, and then to found Outpost Recruitment in 2012 to connect construction and engineering employers with the talent they needed. Ruairi grew up with two brothers working across major infrastructure globally so found the built environment intriguing.

That work is the foundation of what he writes about: construction and engineering professionals trying to establish themselves here, the firms competing to hire them, and the immigration and recruitment realities that connect the two. His articles draw on the industry relationships and hiring knowledge he’s built recruiting in the sector for over a decade — relationships grounded in strong ethics and a consistent track record of delivering top local and international talent.

Outside work, Ruairi travels widely and spends his time snowboarding, surfing, hiking, and backcountry camping across British Columbia.
