Significant Construction Projects Hiring in Toronto, Canada
Ontario Line – $30 Billion
The Ontario Line is one of the most ambitious infrastructure projects in Toronto’s history. Spanning 15.6 kilometers with 15 stations, this subway line will create new transit connections from Exhibition Place in the west to the Ontario Science Centre in the east. The project’s $30 billion budget highlights its scale and importance in alleviating congestion on the city’s overburdened subway system.
Once completed in the early 2030s, the Ontario Line will reduce travel times and provide relief for the existing Line 1 (Yonge-University). The line will integrate with other transit systems, including GO Transit, the TTC subway network, and the Eglinton Crosstown LRT, making it easier for residents to navigate the city. Notable stops include key employment hubs, entertainment districts, and residential areas, ensuring that the benefits of the line are widely distributed across the city.
For construction professionals, the Ontario Line offers immense opportunities in tunneling, track laying, and station construction. Early works are already underway, including utility relocations and environmental assessments, and major contracts have been awarded for tunneling and station development.

QEW Garden City Skyway Replacement – $1+ Billion
The QEW Garden City Skyway project involves the replacement of the existing bridge connecting St. Catharines and Niagara-on-the-Lake over the Welland Canal. While located outside Toronto, this project is a key transportation upgrade for the region, ensuring safe and efficient travel along the busy QEW corridor.
With a budget exceeding $1 billion, the design-build-finance (DBF) project will deliver a modern, multi-lane bridge capable of handling increased traffic volumes. The new bridge will address structural challenges faced by the aging Garden City Skyway, which was built in the 1960s, and enhance safety and accessibility for drivers.
The project will require expertise in heavy civil construction, structural engineering, and bridge design. Early works include environmental assessments and preliminary design work, with major construction expected to ramp up in 2025. Once complete, the new bridge will improve connectivity between Toronto and Niagara, supporting tourism, trade, and local economic growth.
Eglinton Crosstown West Extension – $5+ Billion
The Eglinton Crosstown West Extension will transform transit in the western GTA by extending the Eglinton Crosstown LRT an additional 9.2 kilometers west to Renforth Drive, with connections to Pearson Airport planned for a future phase. With an estimated budget exceeding $5 billion, this project is a critical step toward creating a more interconnected and accessible transit system in Toronto.
This extension will operate primarily underground, helping to reduce travel times and improve reliability for commuters traveling between Etobicoke, Mississauga, and Toronto. The project includes advanced tunneling, the construction of an elevated guideway, and the development of new stations along the route. Key milestones include the completion of the Advanced Tunneling Contract 1 package by 2025 and the award of major contracts for elevated guideways and station systems by early 2025.
The Eglinton Crosstown West Extension is expected to be fully operational by 2030-31, offering significant employment opportunities for workers skilled in tunneling, rail systems, and civil engineering. The project aims to improve access to jobs, schools, and essential services, enhancing the quality of life for residents in the western GTA.

Scarborough Subway Extension (Line 2 East Extension) – $5.5 Billion
The $5.5 billion Scarborough Subway Extension will modernize transit in Scarborough, replacing the aging Line 3 Scarborough RT with a three-stop extension of Line 2 (Bloor-Danforth). This vital project will run from Kennedy Station to McCowan Road, providing faster, more reliable service for the region’s growing population.
The project’s three new stations—Lawrence East, Scarborough Centre, and Sheppard East—will connect commuters to key residential, commercial, and institutional areas. The extension will eliminate the need for the outdated Scarborough RT, which has long struggled with reliability issues, and significantly reduce travel times for commuters in the eastern GTA.
The extension is scheduled for completion by the early 2030s, with construction jobs available in civil works, structural engineering, and track installation.
By providing more efficient transit options, the Scarborough Subway Extension is expected to boost local economic development, increase property values, and improve access to essential services across Scarborough.

GO Expansion: On Corridor (OnCorr) – $15+ Billion
One of the most exciting new transit projects in Toronto right now is the GO Transit Rail Expansion known as the On Corridor. The project’s goal is to transform rail service throughout Toronto, Hamilton, and the Greater Toronto Area by offering easy, all-day service every 15 minutes throughout the highest traffic areas. With a budget of over $15 billion and a projected completion date in 2032, this project will modernize and expand the GO Transit system across Toronto, Hamilton, and the GTA.
Key components of the project include electrifying existing tracks, upgrading stations, and implementing advanced signaling systems to improve efficiency and reliability. The OnCorr project is designed to handle the growing demand for public transit in the region and reduce dependency on cars by offering faster, more frequent service.
With so many infrastructure and construction projects in various phases of development throughout Toronto, there’s no shortage of work opportunities available.
