Outpost Recruitment

Canada’s liquefied natural gas (LNG) sector is finally moving from promise to reality. After delayed progress over the last decade, Canada has a solitary export facility live and missed out on events such as the Ukraine War, Iran War and rising global demand. Canada currently exports 2 bcf/day which is miniscule in terms of global exports of 15 bcf when global exports annually are 53-55 bcf/d.

After more than a decade of stalled megaprojects, the country is now entering a new construction cycle—anchored by world-scale developments on the West Coast and a pipeline of new projects that could transform Canada into a major global LNG exporter.

The industry’s growing important is seen by the addition of LNG Canada Phase 1 and Ksi Lisims LNG to the Major Project Office list of major projects.

For construction professionals, this represents one of the most significant industrial opportunities in the country today.

After years of delays, construction activity is now accelerating—and that’s where the jobs are. Outpost is focused on hiring construction professionals to LNG construction projects through our consultant and contractor partners in the industry.

Why LNG Matters: A Global Opportunity

Global demand for LNG is growing rapidly, driven by:

  • Asia’s transition away from coal
  • Energy security concerns in Europe
  • Long-term demand for lower-emission fuels

Canada is uniquely positioned to capitalize on this shift:

  • Vast natural gas reserves in Western Canada
  • Short shipping distances to Asian markets
  • Lower-emission LNG potential through hydroelectric power

The scale of opportunity is enormous. Canada currently has seven LNG export projects in development, representing ~$109 billion in potential investment and over 50 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) of capacity.

Acronyms:

  • LNG – Liquid Natural Gas
  • MTPA – Million Tonnes Per Annum
  • BCF/D – Billion cubic feet per day
  • FID – Final Investment Decision

Major LNG Projects – Construction Complete

Coastal GasLink Pipeline, Northern BC – $14.5bn

A critical piece of LNG infrastructure, ~670 km pipeline delivering gas from northeastern BC to Kitimat. This project created thousands of construction jobs and continues to support operations and expansion phases tied to LNG Canada.

LNG Canada Phase 1, Kitimat, BC – $40bn

Canada’s first large-scale LNG export facility is now operational—and still expanding. Capacity (Phase 1): 1.84 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d) or ~14 MTPA, with expansion to 26 MTPA in Phase 2. Status: Operational (first cargo shipped in 2025)

LNG Canada is the anchor project for the entire sector. It includes a liquefaction plant and a marine terminal, a massive modular construction program and integration with the 670 km Coastal GasLink pipeline

Even though Phase 1 is complete, ongoing construction, maintenance, and potential Phase 2 expansion (estimated ~$30B) will continue to drive labour demand for years.

LNG Projects in the Pipeline (Next Wave)

Beyond current construction, several major projects are advancing toward final investment decisions (FID).

Ksi Lisims LNG, Northwest BC – $10bn

It will be a floating export facility near the B.C.-Alaska border exporting 2 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d) or 12 MTPA. Partners include Nisga’a Nation, Western LNG and Rockies LNG. Focus will be low-carbon LNG exports to Asia

LNG Canada Phase 2, Kitimat, BC – $30bn

The most likely near-term mega project expansion is expected an final investment decision by end of 2026 and will see export capacity doubled on LNG Canada project. If approved, this would trigger another multi-year construction boom comparable to Phase 1.

Sunrise Pipeline Expansion, Northwest BC – $4bn

This project involves building approximately 137 kilometres (km) of 42-inch diameter natural gas pipeline, extending southwest of Chetwynd to the Canada-United States border near Sumas, B.C

Tilbury LNG Phase 2, Vancouver, BC – $3.5bn

The project features a new 142,400 to 162,000 cubic meter storage tank and increased liquefaction capacity of up to 3.5 million tonnes per year.

Most projects are concentrated in British Columbia, creating a regional construction hotspot.

What This Means for Construction Careers

The LNG sector is fundamentally a mega-project-driven industry, which means:

1. Long Project Lifecycles

Projects run for 5 + years, offering stable employment across phases:

  • Early works (site prep, roads, marine works)
  • Peak construction (mechanical, electrical, structural)
  • Commissioning and operations

2. Strong Earnings Potential

Due to remote locations and project scale:

  • Camp work and rotation schedules are common
  • Premium wages and overtime opportunities

In-Demand LNG Construction Roles in Canada

LNG jobs in Canada in the construction phase often include 14/7 rotations due to the remote locations of the projects.

Challenges Facing LNG Construction in Canada

Despite the opportunity, the sector is not without risks:

  • Regulatory complexity and long approval timelines
  • High construction costs compared to the U.S.
  • Environmental scrutiny and emissions targets
  • Infrastructure requirements (pipelines, power, ports)

Historically, many LNG projects were cancelled—but the current wave suggests the industry has reached a turning point.

The Bottom Line

Canada’s LNG sector is entering a critical growth phase. With one major facility operational and several more under construction or advancing toward approval, the country is positioning itself as a serious global LNG supplier.

For construction professionals, this means:

  • Multi-billion-dollar projects
  • Long-term employment pipelines
  • Opportunities across trades, engineering, and project management

The LNG boom in Canada is no longer theoretical—it’s happening now.
