The combined value of the top 100 projects has increased from $300bn to a whopping $343bn. The construction sector relies on federal stimulus in good times and also in bad, and right now the Canadian economy is more and more reliant on mega infrastructure projects, which tend to be federally funded.

The Top 5 projects in Canada for 2026

  1. Pickering Generating Station, Ontario – $26bn

How does this $343bn over 100 project breakdown by sector

  • The defence sector accounts for 3 projects.
  • Nuclear is playing a critical role in this increase despite having only 4 projects on the list. Pickering Nuclear Station Refurbishment and Darlington New Nuclear Project alone, totalling $50bn on top of the existing Darlington Nuclear Station Refurbishment and Bruce Power Refurbishment. Nuclear is a hot space right now, with Small Nuclear Reactor (SMR’s) a major component in some of these new nuclear developments. Learn more about Canada’s nuclear industry and job opportunities.

Buildings V Linear Infrastructure

Given we often assume that infrastructure is restricted to “linear” projects, it’s interesting to note that “vertical” buildings account for an impressive 36 of the top 100 projects.

Mega-hospitals account for 21 of the 36 projects coast to coast, a clear sign that long-term public infrastructure, especially healthcare, is a major driver among Canada’s biggest construction projects. Hospital construction can be particularly intensive on mechanical, electrical and IT skillsets compared to other “heavy civil” construction projects on this list

Looking by province yields an interesting perspective, as it shows a huge disparity in where the projects are located. With 42% of the top 100 projects located in Ontario alone, and if we include BC and Quebec, only three provinces account for over 65 of the Top 100 projects.

  • Ontario (42)
  • British Columbia (21)
  • Quebec (22)
  • Alberta (7)

While workers in the infrastructure sector are traditionally expected to “follow the work”, it appears that those focused on major infrastructure in the Greater Toronto Area may not be expected to move for the foreseeable future.
